Recently I was contacted by a friend and long time safari companion. He was asking where we could do a good long walk in proper big game country; somewhere that we could see buffalo regularly. A real traditional safari like in days gone by.
I wrote a few emails to various colleagues and friends in a couple of countries asking if they have anything that could fit this bill and got a few good ideas.
I have discovered though that this kind of intensely personal safari only seems to be catered for by one company. It’s a big call, asking an outfitter to put together a whole mobile camping arrangement for just one person. They will do it of course – but then that one person has to pay for several ‘places’ in order to make it worth their while.
No matter how you look at it – a walking safari lasting several days for just one person is going to be expensive. The lightweight camps need to be packed up and moved each day to the next evening’s site and this obviously includes staff, food and the rest of the things that make safari camping enjoyable – a little wine perhaps!
So after looking around I have found what I think could be the perfect setup for such a safari.
The first concern was where to do it. We need a really good wild area that has the wildlife, including the big five and especially buffalo.
Then we need a really good company that we know and trust to provide good equipment, good vehicles, good back up in case of emergency, good staff…and they had to be a company that owns the lease on the good wildlife area!
So here we are again with “Legendary Expeditions” in Tanzania, my most trusted ‘go to’ outfitter on the continent!
Legendary, through its sister company, Tanzania Game Tracker Safaris, owns the lease on Maswa Game Reserve in Northern Tanzania…the ideal location for a traditional long safari walk.
